At St. Andrew’s School each student is assigned a faculty adviser and this relationship becomes the basis of student support here at St. Andrew's. The Adviser helps each new student make the best possible adjustment to school life and returning students form a relationship that often goes beyond graduation. Advisers meet students twice daily and act as mentors by providing academic guidance and motivating advisees to be advocates for themselves. This also involves assisting in goal-setting, self-monitoring, and developing strategies to become active learners. If a student is experiencing a problem or if a teacher, coach, or dorm parent has concerns about a student, the adviser is the first line of communication. The adviser is also the direct link from St. Andrew's School to parents.
After completing their first year at St. Andrew’s, students are given the opportunity to request a particular adviser.
Advisers also assist with the following:
• Parent communication - Advisers frequently call parents to discuss their child’s progress. Parent's are contacted by the student's adviser within the first few weeks of school to get acquainted with one another and discuss any issues of concern for the parents and this communication continues approximately every two weeks after the initial contact. Advisers reflect not only on the student’s achievement but on conduct and attitude.
• Effort Marks - Along with end-of-quarter grades, effort marks are kept track of because they are crucial to a student's success here at St. Andrew's. They serve as an indication of whether a student is working to his or her potential. Advisers can often help the students see how others see them and encourage them to do their best.
• Course selection - Advisers meet with their advisees individually every spring to discuss appropriate course selections for the upcoming school year. They help students keep track of the academic credits necessary to graduate and to choose courses at the correct level. Parents receive a copy of the course selections for approval.
