Job Title: School Nurse

St. Andrew’s School, a boarding and day school located in Barrington, Rhode Island, seeks a school nurse beginning in August 2026. The School Nurse supports the health and well-being of students across the Middle School, Upper School, and Residential Program. This role contributes directly to the school’s educational mission by reducing health-related barriers to learning and promoting a safe, supportive environment in which students can thrive physically, academically, and socially.
The School Nurse provides attentive, inclusive care to a diverse student population, including day and boarding students, international students, and students with chronic or ongoing medical needs. The position requires strong clinical skills, sound judgment, organization, and the ability to collaborate effectively with students, families, faculty, and administrators.
This is a 10-month position aligned with the academic year.
Regular on-campus hours are 7:45 a.m. – 4:15 p.m. Monday - Friday, with additional on-call rotation to support the residential program.
The School Nurse practices in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act of Rhode Island and all applicable state and federal regulations.
Primary Responsibilities
Direct & Acute Care
Assess, triage, and provide care for students and staff presenting with illness or injury
Deliver first aid and manage minor injuries and common acute conditions
Identify situations requiring referral to urgent care, emergency services, or outside providers
Take the lead in coordinating and responding to all on-campus medical emergencies
Provide emergency medical response during the school day and during school-sponsored activities as needed
Manages complex polypharmacy protocols, overseeing organization, inventory control, and secure administration of multi-medication regimens while maintaining strict adherence to safety standards
In partnership with the athletic trainer, supports safe participation in athletics and school programs
Mental Health Collaboration
Partner with the School Counselor to support students experiencing mental health concerns
Assist in assessing when physical symptoms may be related to stress or emotional factors
Collaborate on care planning and communication with families when appropriate
Provide health-related support and monitoring for students returning to school following mental health treatment
Boarding & On-Call Support
Participate in the shared on-call rotation for boarding students, typically one weekend per month
Provide phone triage and guidance to residential staffAssist boarding students in accessing local healthcare services, including scheduling appointments and coordinating transportation
Communicate with families regarding health concerns as appropriate
Chronic Condition & Individual Health Planning
Monitor and support students with chronic medical conditions
Develop and implement individualized nursing care plans in collaboration with physicians and families
Share relevant health information with faculty and staff while maintaining confidentiality
Assist in implementing health accommodations that support student participation in academic and residential life
Health Promotion & Prevention
Provide early identification of health concerns that may impact learning
Support communicable disease monitoring and follow school guidelines regarding exclusion and return
Ensure compliance with Rhode Island immunization requirements
Promote illness and injury prevention practices within the school community
Serve on the school’s emergency response team, providing data-driven insights to inform school-wide emergency protocols and risk mitigation strategies.
Documentation & Compliance
Maintain accurate and confidential student health records
Oversee immunization documentation, medication administration records, visit logs, and incident reports
Utilize the Magnus Health Portal to manage required forms and medical documentation, and serve as the portal administrator
Adhere to HIPAA, FERPA, and state regulatory requirements
Training & Collaboration
Train staff in health-related tasks that may be delegated within regulatory guidelines
Support CPR and First Aid certification efforts
Collaborate with faculty, administrators, residential staff, the School Counselor, and families to address student health needs
Minimum Qualifications
Registered Nurse licensed in Rhode Island or eligible for endorsement
Bachelor of Science in Nursing
BLS certification
Minimum of 2 years of nursing experience
Preferred Qualifications
PALS or ACLS certification
Pediatric experience
Triage experience
Experience in a school, community health, or boarding environment
